Google is known for its two-tone rear finish but the internet giant’s ditching the look this year in favor of a single slab of glossy that houses the ‘G’ logo and a new square camera module. Past phones have also featured rear-mounted fingerprint scanners but Google is replacing them with a Face ID-like rival this year, which brings us on to the next set of features.

The secure facial recognition system is accompanied by Google’s highly anticipated Project Soli radar chip that’ll introduce support for a wide range of gestures to better control the Android 10 interface. Also present is a wide-angle selfie camera that’ll likely produce regular selfie shots through a combination of cropping and Super Res Zoom software. Lastly, all of this is packaged up into a thick bezel that sits above the 6.3-inch 90Hz display which itself is coupled with slim side bezels and a slightly larger chin.

Android 10 will be at the heart of Google’s Pixel 4

As mentioned previously, Google’s next smartphone will rather unsurprisingly ship with Android 10 straight out of the box. This update introduces a new gesture-based navigation interface, contextually aware Smart Reply and Suggested Actions for notifications, enhanced location sharing privacy controls, seamless background updates, and a variety of improvements to Digital Wellbeing. 

Another feature arriving with Android 10 is native Dark Mode and Google will presumably focus on this with the Pixel 4. The company seems to have prepared at least one wallpaper that adapts to Dark Mode. Moreover, today’s photos seem to suggest the black Pixel 4 XL ships with Dark Mode activated as standard whereas the white model doesn’t.

The Google Pixel 4 series will likely be announced at an event in early October, perhaps on Tuesday, October 8 or Wednesday, October 9. Pre-orders should commence immediately after the press conference and be followed up by shipments on Friday, October 18.
